Queen of the Sinhala Cinema Malani Fonseka, MP receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from Festival Director Samuel Holt at the International Film Festival held in Kandy on Friday. This was the first international film festival held in Kandy. Over 15 of the newest independent films from around the world made their Sri Lankan premiere during the festival days. Malini Fonseka was the first Sri Lankan actress to receive an international award at the 9th Moscow International Film Festival in 1977 and the second international award was won by her at the 6th International Delhi Cinema Festival. Commenting on the Kandy International Film Festival, Malini Fonseka said that holding an international film festival in Kandy gives an indication to the world that Sri Lanka is a very safe place in the world to hold international events
